About HGBA

Hingham Girls Basketball Association (HGBA) is the organization that operates both the in-town intramural league (GALs) and the Hingham Travel Basketball Program. The programs are designed for pre-high school and elementary school girls.

HGBA also provides opportunities for qualified individuals in high school to referee games in GALs. Opportunities, however, are limited so not all qualified candidates can be accommodated. We are also always looking for volunteers in any and all capacity, so please sign up to help out! We look forward to seeing you on the courts!

About Travel

The Travel League is designed for Hingham girls in Grades 4 through 8. Teams are selected after a tryout held in early fall. Two travel teams (A Division - South Shore League and B Division - Old Colony League) are selected for Grades 4 through 8. Players will be selected based upon an evaluation of their basketball skills. Each team is limited to 10 to 12 players. This means that all who wish to play may not be accommodated, and “cuts” will be made as necessary.

Travel season will run from early November to the middle/end of March. All regular season games are played on weekends. The 5th grade through 8th grade teams will have 2 practices per week; will play 16 regular season games (half in Hingham, and the other half in surrounding towns), 2 tournaments (1 over Thanksgiving weekend), and the season-ending tournament if the team qualifies. The 4th grade Old Colony League team will have 1-2 practices per week and play 14 regular season games (all in Hanson). Playing time is at the discretion of the coaches.

The cost for 2022 - 2023 is $325; players are responsible for purchasing their own uniform. Additional costs may be required if teams decide to enter additional tournaments. Travel players are encouraged to play GALs, and will pay $75 (which is a $50 discount) to play GALs.

About GALs

GALs is the in-town intramural league for Hingham girls in Grades 1 through 8. Registration is open to all that are interested in participating. The season runs from the beginning of December to the middle/end of March. During December, clinics will be held each Sunday to sharpen those basketball skills.

Grades 1 and 2 play together in one division; for the remaining grades, the players are put on teams within each grade, with a division for Grades 5 and 6 and a division for Grades 7 and 8. Grades 1 through 4 are instructional and involve a practice/scrimmage on Sundays for each team; scrimmages for these grades consist of 3v3 and/or 4v4 with fewer players on the court allowing less congestion and increased playing time. Grades 5 through 8 are both instructional and competitive and involve a weekly practice and a Sunday game for each team. A champion for Grades 5 through 8 is determined by a playoff. GALs has an “equal playing” time rule. All games and practices are played in Hingham in assorted Town facilities.

The cost for GALs for the 2020–2021 season is $125 for the 1st player, $85 for the 2nd player, and $65 for any additional players.  Fees increase by $25 on December 1st.
