Hingham Flag Football Weekly Announcements:

Hingham Flag Football Weekly Announcements:

1.  This Saturday October 7th, we have games.   This is also Columbus Day weekend and the schools are closed on Monday October 9th.  This is one of my favorite weekend as players will get more touches as with any holiday weekend, people will be away and there will be less players on each team.   We will merge teams if we have to but everyone who shows up will play.  For those of you who will be in Hingham on Columbus Day weekend, we look forward to a fun filled day of football.  For those of you who will be away, safe travels and we will see you the following weekend.  Keep in mind, D1 has their game under the lights the evening of Columbus Day.

2.  Division 1 Only.  On Monday, October 9th, Columbus Day, as a bonus game, and in addition to your game on Saturday October 7th,  Division 1 will have their Game under the lights.  Division 1 is K and 1st grade.   All Games Under the Lights are held at Hingham High School.  Yes this is Columbus Day, but it was the only way to get an early time at the High School.   However, since the Game Under the Lights is a bonus game, we do not play in bad weather.   I am mentioning this now as the 5 day weather forecast shows rain.  Hopefully that will change.  A decision will be made by 3pm on Monday if it is raining.

3. For Division 2, your game under the lights will be Wednesday October 11th at 7:30 pm.

4. For Division 4, your game under the lights will be October 18th at 7:30 pm.

5.  The rain make up date for games under the lights is October 25th.

6. The season will conclude on Saturday October 28th.   For Division 1,2, and 3, your season will conclude at with a regularly schedule game.  Please note we may shorten the game a tad as we will be having play-offs for Division 4 and Division 5.   It is my intention to conclude the play-offs in one day.  However, this may be a logistical challenge.  Therefore, we may play D4 and D5 championship games simultaneously on Wednesday evening November 1st under the lights at Lynch Fields.   More information to follow.

7.  As previously communicated. in support of our Hingham High School Sports Teams, join in their game day tradition and feel free to wear your jerseys on to school on Friday.

8.  Mid-season Report:

  • For a league our size, over 450 players on 42 teams, spread among 5 divisions with children ranging in age of 5 to 14, things are going fairly well.   We have had limited to no injuries and every child who has asked to play has been afforded that opportunity.  Our REFs are doing a good job as one of their main responsibilities is to create an exciting environment and try to teach the fundamentals of the game.
  • Here are some friendly reminders to ensure our continued success and enjoyment for all.
    •  It is very important that the QB gets the ball.   That being said, if the two yard buffer is not working, then the Refs will either widen the gap or just not allow any rush.
    • The QB is not allowed to take a direct snap and run with the ball.  There must be either a hand-off or pass.
    • The defense is not allowed to line up in the gap.  They must line up on a person.
    • The play clock is 30 seconds.  So that means a huddle should take no longer than 20 seconds.
    • Each player should get their chance at all the skilled positions.
    • The coaches continue to have discretion over the number of players on the field at any time.  The rules state 8v8.  However, I am fine with 10 v 10, or if in the best interest of all players involved, if the coaches believe a better environment would be 7 vs 7, that is fine.  However, equal time for each player applies.
    • Aggressive play.  Please remind your players that the objective is to grab the flag without grabbing the body and then grabbing the flag.  This is sometimes leading to incidental, and somewhat avoidable tackling.
    • Please make sure belts and flags are readily visible.

9.  Here is the schedule for this weekend.  As always, we play rain or shine.   Please email or call me with any questions or comments.  Andy Shafter, 617-827-0201, ashafter@comcast.net
